Churros con Xocolata

Visit any little sidewalk cafe in Barcelona, and churros are always available as a breakfast or teatime snack! Best enjoyed with espresso.

For the churros

1 cup flour

2 tbsp vegetable oil

1/2 tsp salt

2 tbsp sugar

1 cup water

1/2 cup sugar

1 1/2 tsp powdered cinnamon

a pinch of red chilli powder

Oil for deep frying

Thick plastic bag

Butter paper

For the sauce

100g dark chocolate chips or chocolate bar cut into pieces

100 ml fresh cream

For the churros

1 In a small bowl, add cinnamon powder to 1/2 cup sugar and mix. Grind and keep the powder aside.

2 In a small saucepan, heat the water, oil, sugar and salt and bring to boil.

3 Add the flour while slowly mixing until it forms a ball.

4 Allow the dough to cool a little, then pour into the plastic bag and cut a small hole.

5 Heat oil in a deep frying pan. Carefully squeeze out strips of the dough (about 5 cm length) into the oil and fry till golden brown.

6 Remove the churros onto butter paper and drain.

7 Roll the churros into the sugar/cinnamon powder.

For the sauce

1 In a saucepan, heat the cream but do not bring to boil.

2 Put on low heat and add the chocolate chips. Let it sit for 30 sec, then mix well.

3 If you’re feeling adventurous, add some red hot chilli pepper powder!

Serve cool churros with hot chocolate sauce!
